Partner spots: auction and availability

Best in San Francisco is free for its readers: it is funded by
partner spots, shown above the ranking and marked as advertising. They are
awarded by open auction, in a single payment: everyone picks their own amount,
and the amount decides the display order.

Take a spot

Go to the page for your trade and click “Add my business”: you will see the entry price, the
bids already in place and the amount to beat for each position.

How it works

  1. Type your business name to pull up your Google Business Profile: contact details,
address and website are filled in for you.
  2. You add your description, your highlights and your services.
  3. You pick your bid, above the entry price. Bids go up in steps of $5.
  4. You pay once: your spot goes live immediately.

Exactly what you are buying

  • A single payment: no subscription, no recurring charge, nothing to
    cancel.
  • A spot shown as long as the site is online and as long as your bid is
among the 10 highest on the page.
  • Your logo, your description, your services, a link to your website, and your real
Google rating when we can match it.
  • Your receipts and invoices in your account.

If someone bids higher

  • They move ahead of you and you move down one spot.
  • Once you drop out of the top 10, your spot stops being shown. You
    are notified by email.
  • You move back up by raising your bid: the top-up adds to your total,
and your bid never goes down.
  • Dropping out does not entitle you to a refund: that is how the auction
works, and it is stated in our terms.

What the auction does not buy

The editorial ranking is computed from Google ratings and review counts.
No payment moves a business into it, up it or out of it, and the “Our pick” box is awarded by
the calculation, never sold.

Partner spots sit alongside the ranking: they do not reorder it, and they
carry the “Partner” label.

That is what makes the site worth something: a reader who trusts the ranking is a reader
who also reads your listing. See
our methodology.
